What to See This Weekend? (today)
This week’s “What to see this weekend” is being moved to today, due to the slight lag on posts. I guess it should really be called “What to see Today.”
Anyhow, here we go:
THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR
dir. Rob Cohen
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello
And the series continues with more half zany, fully absurd adventure of Brendan Fraser in the mysterious land where mummies and all sorts of shit come back to life on a regular basis. Somehow - though people apparently still love this - it has found funding, and people want to continue to believe that a nit wit actor with marginal skills is going to take up the sword and defeat armies of the undead. Well, if that’s your cup of tea, than fine, go see this, I won’t see you there.
SWING VOTE
dir. Joshua Michael Stern
Starring: Kevin Costner, Paula Patton, Kelsey Grammer, Nathan Lane, Dennis Hopper
Does anyone else remember that Family Guy episode where Chris and Brian go to see Waterworld and Chris comes out confused and says, “I don’t get it…how does Kevin Costner keep getting work?”
I’d like to meet the focus group that wrote this movie for the studio, “bah, it’s an election year, what’s hot? Swing votes? Bah, who do the kids like? Kevin Costner? Buh, Kelsey Grammer, he was on The Simpsons…”
THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN
dir. Ryuhei Kitamura
Starring: Vinnie Jones, Bradley Cooper, Leslie Bibb
Ah, horror season has begun. The latest slew of gore porn is hitting the theaters, prepare yourselves.
FROZEN RIVER [limited]
dir. Courtney Hunt
Starring: Melissa Leo
This actually looks like an interesting indie film. Maybe this is my pick of the week, but I’m not sure. I haven’t seen it yet so I’m not going to endorse it yet.
IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS [NYC]
dir. Alex Holdridge
Starring: Scoot McNairy, Sara Simmonds
I don’t know much about this film, to be honest, but that is the worst title since Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell, wait a second what am I talking about, it’s way worse than that.
