I recently reviewed Nina Davenport’s new documentary Operation Filmmaker. (Click this link to read the full review) The film follows the journey of Muthana Mohmed as Liev Schreiber tries to “rescue” him from the beginning of the Iraq War by giving him a PA job on the set of Everything is Illuminated. Schreiber discovers Muthana after seeing an MTV special on the film student in Iraq after the bombing of his school during the preliminary stages of the war.

What follows is a dark journey into the complexities of the war. It reveals the difficulties that lie at the heart of the war. A misunderstanding. There is a failure to communicate and understand that seems to lie within all of the troubles of the war for both Americans and Iraqis. At least that seems to be part of the argument this film puts forth as it’s impossible to take sides or feel fully for any character in the documentary. I won’t drag on and on about the subject, but the film is fascinating, easily one of the best documentaries of the year. If the abrupt stop to this post is frustrating read the full review to hear my full ramblings.
